Our home is always where ever the military sends us but some times I just wish they would send us home to Texas. We have landed at Hill AFB in Utah this time and are very happy with it. Life here is different but we are adjusting.

So much has changed but through it all we have grown as a family. I can not wait to reboot this blog and share our lives with everyone.Christyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12121887739810149356noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181084496310151034.post-41254272581204981332014-01-13T11:27:00.000-07:002014-01-13T11:27:37.137-07:00Playdough

Alex and Dallas love to swim and we always spend our summer doing swimming lessons and playing at the pool. They are both little fish and I can not keep them out of the water. Our very last day at swimming a small little white dog came up to us. He was starving, covered in mud and ticks, and had nails that would wrap around my finger. It broke my heart, but I did have some hope. He had rabies tags on.

A short call to the vet and we had his last known phone number and his name. It was Arabic and so a Google search was needed. His name translated to "Child of Allah". Yup.

I spent the next two day tracking down his owners. It proved difficult since no one spoke English and I do not anything else. Finally we received a phone call. His owners had been found. They told us to "take him to the pound", "throw him back out on the streets", or "do whatever."

DO WHATEVER??? How could someone be so heartless? We decided to keep him and try to help him find his forever home. We had already bathed him, trimmed his nails, treated him for cooties, and fallen in Love.

We looked into rescues and talked to others about a possible placement for him. Nothing felt right. Alex had fallen in love with him and they had become best friends. He was unlike any other Chihuahua I had ever seen. He loved kids. He never tried to bite anyone. He was house trained. And he loved Alex.

Alex named him Playdough and we decided the sweet boy was going to stay. He has been micro-chipped and neutered. I never thought I would own a Chihuahua but I just love this little guy. He is a huge part of our family now!Christyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12121887739810149356noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181084496310151034.post-66908666907003645192014-01-11T15:46:00.007-07:002014-01-11T15:46:56.688-07:00My life is changing......And I really like where it is going.

I have always worked with animals and I don't want to do anything else. The military has been a wonderful decision for my family, but, for me, it has been detrimental to my career and dreams. We have been stationed in New Mexico for 8 of our 10 years in the military. It has been a great place to raise a family and it allows us the opportunity to see Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins- Something most military brats never have. For me it means being a stay at home Mom which is something I NEVER wanted to do. Looking back on the last few years I am so thankful God knew what I needed and did not listen to my tear filled prayers. I still miss working and having a life away from this little corner lot. I miss my animals. I miss having a reason to get up every morning other than the dishes in the sink or laundry on the floor.

A few months ago I was presented with an opportunity to help a cute little dog. (That story will follow soon.) Working with Shooke Unleashed has been a blessing and I feel like I have something just for myself. I am fostering dogs for the rescue who need someone to just love them and teach them how to be part of a family. It is very challenging but so rewarding. We currently have 6 dogs in our home - four are our forever babies and two are here until they get into a different rescue or find their forever homes.

Another new and scary development is with my health. I have fought anemia for years and most doctors just wave me out the door with yet another prescription for iron pills that make me sick. I have fought for a referral to a hematologist for years with no luck. Being anemic was not something they thought needed a referral. I was 'only' tired. I just needed to eat better. RIGHT!! I am so tired all the time. I fall asleep doing the dishes. I can not go anywhere alone because I am afraid I will fall asleep while driving. I don't want to work in the yard. I can't play with my children. Everything requires energy and I just do not have it in me.

I finally have a hematologist and I love him. "Dr. Mac" is wonderful. I met with him yesterday and I have Hope. Hope is a wonderful thing! My iron is so low he was amazed I was able to function at all. I am short THREE units of blood and I have almost no Iron in my body. He spend an hour with me just talking and explaining what my lack of iron really means and how he will help me fix it. I will start IV Iron next week at our local Cancer Center and will need at least 4 treatments. After that will come the many tests to find out where I am loosing blood and putting a stop to it. It could be as simple as my monthly cycle, which would mean a hysterectomy , or something in my digestive track that would require surgery and on going treatment. I am ready to start my treatment and Dr. Mac believe I will start to feel better within hours of getting my first IV. Can you believe that? All it will take is 30 minutes once a week and I will feel better. I am so thankful!

So with that I am starting writing here again. I have Hope. I am not better yet but now I have a plan.Christyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12121887739810149356noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181084496310151034.post-48990699481816940552013-07-02T15:01:00.000-06:002013-07-02T15:01:30.834-06:00July 2, 2013 - Playing Catch UpI am still here. Life is going on like normal. Well, sort of.

David came home from his deployment after only 5 weeks due to an injury during training. I am so glad to have him home but he is really upset that he is not with his team. But I don't really care. David is home! :) He is having surgery this month and he could deploy again this fall.

His early return through all my plans out the window. I did not plant as much as I normally do since the boys and I don't really eat a lot when he is gone. So I have empty planter beds just waiting for the late summer planting for this fall. The flowers are growing wild and crazy - the way I like them. I know it drives David nuts but I don't really want to tame them.

So today I am going to play catch up. Lots of pictures to show everyone what my garden looks like today. Weeds and All.
We started out with a slow rain that we need so very much and now we have high winds and sunshine. It isn't a great gardening day. I am stuck inside making bread and cleaning house. Not what I want to do on a Spring Day.

I do have a couple of flowers that are trying to brighten up my day!

We have a plain light pole in our front yard. It really bothered me to have a metal pole just sitting in the yard. I came up with a plan to add a little interest to the pole and to hopefully make it a little more attractive. I found a pot at Lowe's and had David cut the bottom out for me. It slid over the pole and looks great.

Again. So we are trying to finish all the little projects he needed to get done this year. The most important project for me was the dog house. I can not go anywhere while he is gone without a dog house.

It was a family project and took all weekend to complete. I LOVE it. David even agreed to let me paint it purple!
Last night we were 27 degrees.

In May.

In Southern New Mexico.

Everything was covered and hopefully I didn't loose very many plants. We should be in the upper 40's or the 50's at night, so every perennial I own has already come up. It just needs to warm up and stay warm. According to the three weather sites I check, we should be finished with freezes. I hope they are right.

Now a little proud Mommy moment. Dallas made Abbit again (A's and B's Because I Tried). He has made Abbit in both English and Spanish all year. Every class he has taken since Kindergarten has been taught in English and Spanish. Twice the homework but he has thrived in the program.

He has decided that he wants to be a 'Normal' kid next year. No dual language program. Less homework and more fun time. I am worried that it will be too easy for him, but the school says it will work with him. I just want him to be happy.

Now I am off to work in the garden. Everything has to be uncovered and I have a lot of plants to get into the ground. I hope everyone has a great weekend!
I have had this box covered all and the spinach and lettuce have loved their little grow house. I took their cover off last week and ended up having to put it back on for the last three nights. I promise you, the turtle crossing the road did not need to be rescued. He was just fine. His new "owners" then think that turtle care is easy. They throw it a cricket and think everything will be just fine. It does not work that way.

They need special lighting, special heating, special cages, and special food. They were not meant to be in a little aquarium. They need space to roam and dig and hunt and swim. Basically they need to be a turtle. So come winter, when they should be getting ready to hibernate, the poor turtles are starved down, have vitamin deficiencies, and many other medical problems. They are too weak to be released. That is when I get them. After the fun has worn off and the animal is about to die.

This year I have four box turtles. All of them were "RESCUED" from the wild. I still don't understand that.

One is very small, probably only three years old, and was kept in a shoe box on some one's desk. They gave him lettuce to eat and sometimes water to drink. (Box turtles don't like lettuce.) He was so weak when I first got him that I was afraid he would die. He wouldn't open his eyes. He wouldn't walk around his new box. He just sat there.

I have had him for about four months. He is still very underweight and is not a great eater, but I am sure that I will be able to release him in a couple of months.

Number two and three are both pretty healthy. They were underweight and dehydrated by the time I got them. They are both looking great after a soak and a few good meals. They will have no problem returning to the wild.
Turtle Four is my special baby. I thought I was going to loose him several times. He came to me 4 months after he was taken from the wild. He was so sick. I spent three months working on his eye infections. Every time I thought he was better they came back. One eye was so infected that I could not get the puss cap out of his eye. Finally I was able to remove a dried down cap of puss the size of a pencil eraser. He now has his vision back and is a mean little thing. He tries to bite me every day and will chase me if given the chance.
I know they are just four little turtles and saving them will not change the world, but for them, the world is a better place. Once spring is here and the nights are warm, my four little rescues will get returned to the wild. I will take them to a place that is far from people and has everything a little turtle could ever want. I will undo what other people did to them. They will be free once more.

57 Days.

Our time is going way to fast. It just hit me today that he will really be gone. I will have the boys, and the house, and the garden all to myself for the rest of the year. He *Might* be home for Christmas but I am not holding my breath. Everyone is having deployment problems right now. Why would we be any different?

So, as of today, I am putting my big girl panties on. I am making my To DO lists and getting things done. I don't have anymore time - I can not live in denial any more.

57 Days........
Our snow started at 7:30 and within a few minutes we were white. I love the snow and everyone knows that we need the moisture. The little birds that visit my yard every morning did not let the snow stop them from eating breakfast. It is hard to tell in these photos, but they all have red breasts and tails. I don't know what kind they are but they are very pretty. I have decided that I need a better camera and a bird ID book.

When I walked into the kitchen today I was greeted by this beautiful flower. It was a welcomed surprise. I am a little confused though....I am pretty sure when I bought this plant two years ago it had red flowers. I am not complaining. I will take any flower I can get in February!Christyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12121887739810149356noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181084496310151034.post-22178175467168347282013-02-10T20:46:00.000-07:002013-02-12T13:54:56.159-07:00Hello Again....I can not believe that it is already February. It feels like I just pulled out the last of the plants and spread out the mulch. We are starting to get ready for spring. The onions are growing under their lights and the plan for the garden is ready. It should be a great year for us.

We are going to have a few struggles this year. David will deploy in April. I am not looking forward to it but I know this is just part of our life. He should be home before Christmas so it isn't all bad. Dallas still wants to play sports (football and baseball) and his practice/game schedule will be challenging for me to handle alone. Alex is sweet, wonderful Alex. He is 3 now and loves to 'help' Mommy. We have lost a few plants this winter due to his over helpfulness.

I did successfully grow Carrots, Spinach, and Lettuce this winter and will post pictures of them soon. I should be able to harvest Carrots this week - So I will get to do a Harvest Monday soon!

It is great to be back on my blog and I hope to catch up with everyone soon!Christyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12121887739810149356noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181084496310151034.post-7936273133266204762012-10-13T08:00:00.000-06:002012-10-13T08:00:03.242-06:00Sweet Potatoes

I planted my sweet potatoes last spring for the fun of it. I didn't really think I would get any for our table but the vine is pretty. I needed a cheap filler for the front bed and I had a couple of sweet potatoes that wanted to sprout. They were an unknown variety from the Commissary but they grew like crazy in the front bed.

Our first frost was predicted for last week - It never happened. I knew I needed to start the fall cleanup before the frost so I started pulling out all the potato vines. I ended up filling our dumpster with them. I only planted two little starts. Two. That's it.

They really really liked the front bed. Really. As I made my way to the heart of the vine I found a wonderful surprise. I actually had sweet potatoes! I was able to dig up a basket full from just one plant.

My flower bed looked really ugly after I pulled out the vine.

I still have a lot of work to do in order to get this flower bed ready for winter. I am collecting seeds for next year and trying to mark were the perennials are planted. I have a terrible memory and I know come spring I will be trying to figure out what is a weed and what is a flower. I am finally done canning for this year. I did a lot more than I usually do but I still did not get to put up tomatoes. I decided to post a few pictures of my hall pantry. It is normally a mess so I wanted to take a few pictures before everything gets moved around and mixed up!

Technical research uses many of the same techniques that are used during high school or college but the focus of the research is not to just write a paper. The document written will have effects far greater than the grade book.
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Secondary vs. Primary Research
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">All technical research begins with what you already know. After considering this information the researcher needs to consider the audience, purpose and scope of the paper. Then the author needs to gather and evaluate the new information and form their own conclusions. All research is either Secondary or Primary.
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Secondary Research is indirect reports of information. A reporter in Texas writing about an earthquake in California would be using secondary research. Secondary research also gives a starting point for new research. "Larmar Reinsch argues that poor preparation promotes reinventing the wheel rather than building on prior knowledge gained through business and technical communication research." (Kim, 2000) Some places to start looking for secondary research are :

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">work archives

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">work correspondence and emails

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">library catalogs

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">periodicals

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">general reference materials

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Primary Research usually starts with secondary research. The information gathered in the beginning of a project can lead to unanswered questions and to find those answers, primary research is required. Some examples of primary research are :

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Surveys

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Interviews

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Observations

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Experimentation

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">After gathering all the information, an author can have a difficult time deciding what research to use and what research is just some one's ramblings. There are several factors to consider when evaluating these sources.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Who wrote the paper?

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">What was the author's objective?

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Was the author knowledgeable?

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Did the author accurately use the research provided?

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Was the research or paper relevant?

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">When was the paper written?

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">If any of the answers cause alarm or suspicion then the paper or site is probably not a reliable source. Another quick way to evaluate a website is the last three letters of the web address. If the last three letters are com the site is a commercial website and they are biased to the information they provide. These sites are usually trying to sell a product or idea to their audience and can omit or twist their research to better accomplish this task. If the site ends with gov, mil, org, or edu, then the research should be evaluated further and might be an appropriate research site.

Documentation and Plagiarism

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">After gathering all the information needed, the author then needs to write out their conclusions and give credit to other researchers who influenced their work. "Documentation is a system of giving credit to another person (writer or speaker) for his or her work. It is using a citation system to not whose ideas or words the writer is using and where he or she found them. Responsible writers document ideas and materials they borrow or use."(Smith, 2010) When using a quote, paraphrase, or summery, internal citations direct the reader to the appropriate bibliography. The citations allow others to follow your road map to continue and evaluate your research. This also helps an author avoid plagiarism.

Plagiarism in school can result in a failing grade or suspension from the University. Plagiarism in work can have far worse consequences. Not citing references at work can result in loss of job, lawsuits, and a ruined reputation. All of this can be avoided by properly citing others work within a paper and including a bibliography at the end. It is as simple as that.

Technical research has become part of most jobs in the American workforce. Everyone is required to help develop work techniques or to pass on information to coworkers and customers. Proper research could help someone get a promotion and sloppy research can lead to the exact opposite.
It is really challenging for me and I don't really have anyone to show me what to do. I have a couple of books and you tube videos that are helping but I am not the most coordinated person. I end up with knots, and kinks, and loops, and everything I am trying to avoid. I do a couple of stitches and then rip it all out. I start over more than I would like to admit.

Today I completed my first real project! I made a rug for my bathroom. It is just a simple Double Crochet but I used three yarns at the same time. I love the way it turned out.
I am really enjoying learning how to crochet. I just need to learn how to keep the boys from 'helping' me! I am tired of rolling up my yarn after they stretch it all over the house.

I know I am just being a Mom but he is so small. Well, he is small until he puts on all the pads and his helmet. He ages five years in the time it takes him to get dressed. How can a game that requires so much safety gear be fun?

Time to stop being a scared Mom - He loves it. David and our friend Evan are coaching Dallas' team this year - The RedSkins. We have mostly third graders while the other teams have mostly fourth graders. It does not seem fair to me but I guess that is the way city sports are done.
I am running in circles and can not get off this crazy ride. David was in the hospital, Dallas is playing Tackle Football, and Alex is being a normal two year old. All I want is five minutes without hearing "MOM!"

Since I am so far behind on my blog I thought I would start with a few short updates. My front flower bed looks nothing like it did in April.
I have tried to keep the Sweet Potato Vine in check. I only planted two small starts in June but you can not tell it when you look at the flower bed. I need to dig them up sometime this week. Just one more thing on my To Do List!
I have only had one tomato worm this year. I guess you need to have healthy tomatoes to have tomato worms! When I saw the damage to my plants, I asked Dallas to help me find the 'little monster'. It only took him a few minutes to find it and then came the question I hear every year.

"Can I keep it?"
I now know how my Mom felt so many times. I should have him kill the thing but how can I say no to him. Out came our 'bug jar' and in went the worm and a few branches from my tomato plant. Dallas took care of it and tried to feed it fresh leaves every day. My poor plants started to look a little thin. Then the day before our Anniversary trip, Dallas' worm went into its chrysalis. He took it with him to Granny's just in case it came out.

Last night, while cleaning up the kitchen, I heard something strange. The moth had finally emerged. It would do this at 10 pm on a school night. I woke Dallas up and we went outside to see what his little pet had turned into.
