First Planting for 2012

Today has been beautiful - Very warm and no wind. I took advantage of the weather to get a few lettuces and onions in the ground. We finished filling half of the large bed by the house  with dirt, peat moss, and compost. Then I started planting my Salad Mix that has been growing under the grow lights for about a month.
The first plant in the ground for 2012!

My little row of Salad Mix.

I used their little cups to help shield them from the sun. .

If you look really hard you can see my cute little onions.

The Big Picture.
The onions are planted at the front of the bed so I have room to add a few pavers to stand on in this very large bed. Once the they are in place I will plant my carrots, celery, and radishes around them. And I still have a lot of greens and flowers to plant. I can not wait to see this bed full of plants. Now that the Lettuce and Onions are in the ground I have room to start my tomatoes. I have 50 tomato plants to start this year and I was starting to wonder where I would put them.

  1. WOW! I thought I had too many with 30 tomatoe seedlings planned but I'd love to have your 50! can't wait to see how they all turn out in harvest time :) what varieties did you plant?

your salads and onions look nice and fresh so hope they'll adjust nicely to the new bed.

    1. I did about 15 different varieties, but from the top of my head I can only remember a few. Husky pinks, Velvet reds, Bellestar, Mr. Stripey. I plan on doing a post about them when they are up. I just hope they do good. I have never started so many different plants from seed.

  2. Great idea to shield the new transplants. You have a lot of space for plants.

    1. I should have close to 100 square feet of raised beds before this summer. This is my largest garden ever and I can not wait to see everything growing.

  3. Those cups are such a great idea to help them get used to the sun!

    1. I wanted to do a shade cloth but our wind just destroys everything. :)

  5. Yay, spring! It always makes me feel better to get something in the ground. So far it's only garlic for me, but I'll soon be hardening off the lettuce and onions, too.

    1. My garlic is planted in the front yard this year. It was the only bed I had ready before winter. Next year it will go the the salad garden with the lettuce and the onions.
